In 1885, Robert helped organize Paxton & Vierling Iron Works in Omaha, Nebraska. He was vice-president and Louis was secretary and treasurer. That company is still around today, as Paxton and Vierling Steel<a href="http://www.owenind.com/divisions/pvs-structural-fabrication"><strike> 3</strike></a>, which is a division of Owen Industries. <a href="http://www.owenind.com/about-us"><strike>4</strike></a> As of 2010, the Vierling family was still very involved with the Paxton & Vierling company.<a href="http://www.omaha.com/article/20100608/MONEY/706089883"> <strike>5</strike></a> <br />
<br />
Going back to Vierling, McDowell & Co, when Robert died in 1906,<a href="http://www.sdhistoricalsociety.org/SDHSWeb/MiscFiles/DS-VierlingFamily.pdf"><strike> 6</strike></a> Louis became president of Vierling, McDowell & Co and their sister, Catherine Josephine, or C.J., was vice-president.<a href="http://books.google.com/ebooks/reader?id=f0wwAAAAMAAJ&dq=C.J.+Vierling&as_brr=5&printsec=frontcover&output=reader"><strike>7</strike></a> The company changed its name to the Vierling Steel Works in either 1917 or 1918. <a href="http://memory.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/il/il0100/il0104/data/il0104.pdf"><strike>8</strike></a> Eventually control of the company would be transfered over to Duane T. Molthop, who was probably the brother of Charlotte Bowen Molthop (Louis' wife). According to the Chicago Blue Book, he lived at their address in 1913.<a href="http://www.archive.org/stream/chicagobluebooko1913chic/chicagobluebooko1913chic_djvu.txt"><strike> 9</strike></a> The company still existed in 1968, as seen in <a href="http://milwaukeeroadarchives.com/MilwaukeeRoadMagazine/1968JanuaryFebruary.pdf">an ad from <i>The Milwaukee Road Magazine</i></a> (page 37). By then Vierling Steel Works had bought Burkhardt Steel of Denver, Co. In the next twenty years the two companies would both be closed. <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1989-10-20/news/8901230839_1_evanston-hospital-memorial-services-chicago"><strike>10</strike></a>baby cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14075423441247165807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829227601778618805.post-87771440018427453092011-03-04T21:40:00.000-06:002011-03-04T21:40:13.004-06:00Spotted: Purington Pavers as pavement<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5498058671/" title="purington pavers pavement by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5211/5498058671_bc038829e7.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="purington pavers pavement" /></a></div>These Purington Pavers are actually being used as paving for a road in Rushville, IL. I hate the cold, I hate the bleak skies, I hate how long it lasts, I hate the grey snow and I hate how it's hard for me to deal with. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5451968183/" title="during the blizzard by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5135/5451968183_fac43e0ab7.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="during the blizzard" /></a></div>Winter is just not my thing. Unfortunately I've never been able to get away from it. One of my big life goals is simply to spend winter once in a warm place where they don't have <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002499">SAD</a>. Can you imagine? I know I can't. As it turns out, winter has also impeded my desire to take pictures and to get out of the car when I travel. So it's put kind of a damper on AbandonedHG, but with a <a href="http://www.galesburg.com/topstories/x167312204/It-s-a-mid-winter-heat-wave">current warm spell</a> (60s anyone?) that's almost erased this month's massive amounts of snow, I'm starting to feel a flicker of hope.<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5451995095/" title="snow day! by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5254/5451995095_7e5533851c.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="snow day!" /></a></div>For today, I'm going to leave you with some images of the snow in my area, a day when the weather made it necessary for everybody to abandon the outdoors and stay inside (except for those of us who can't get enough of the feeling of wonderment when people leave behind what they've made.) Just know this, we'll be back very, very soon- before winter's even over!<br />

<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259133219/" title="Nauvoo Temple by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="Nauvoo Temple" height="375" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5088/5259133219_e7108047f0.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>and Nauvoo's Mormon history is the reason it's still famous, remembered, and visited by many today. We'll get to that, but for today we're going to stray away from the actual <a href="http://www.historicnauvoo.net/historic-sites/">Nauvoo Historic District</a> and we're going to look at the other historic district of Nauvoo- the business district at the top of the hill (not so far away from the LDS Temple).<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259142081/" title="panorama of Nauvoo by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="panorama of Nauvoo" height="129" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5287/5259142081_71e8cf3cda.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a>Nauvoo wasn't always Nauvoo. The area was first called Quashquema by the Native Americans; then in the early 1800s, the first white settlers called the town Venus, until 1834 when they changed the name to Commerce. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259811028/" title="Joseph Smith and Zion's Mercantile by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="Joseph Smith and Zion's Mercantile" height="375" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5004/5259811028_e2719c5967.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>In 1839, the Mormons bought Commerce and in April of 1840 Joseph Smith renamed the town, Nauvoo.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nauvoo,_Illinois">(ref)</a> <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259157437/" title="Nauvoo theater sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="Nauvoo theater sign" height="500" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5282/5259157437_f3fc961b47.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>In the mid-1800s, after the Mormon War in Illinois (which, besides Abraham Lincoln, is one of the most significant periods in Illinois history), the majority of the Mormons fled Nauvoo. Luckily for the historic preservation of the city, many German immigrants came to Nauvoo and moved into the almost empty city.<a href="http://www.beautifulnauvoo.com/germanera.html">(ref)</a> At the same time, the Icarians (a French utopian society) immigrated to Nauvoo and set up a commune there.<a href="http://icarianfoundation.org/index.html">(ref) </a><br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5272006219/" title="icarian house by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="icarian house" height="233" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5042/5272006219_ca22cfd696.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>In the 1900s, Nauvoo became known for its wine and blue cheese industries. Unfortunately in 2003, the cheese factory was shut down.<a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2003-05-31/news/0305310113_1_treasure-cave-conagra-foods-wine">(ref)</a> Today thanks to the restoration efforts of many Mormon descendants Nauvoo is known for its history and the massive restoration of many historic buildings, most of which are below the Temple on the flats of Nauvoo.<a href="http://www.greatriverroad.com/quincy/hancockco.htm">(ref)</a> <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259795362/" title="we are proud of nauvoo by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="we are proud of nauvoo" height="500" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5166/5259795362_749c934c07.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>One of the most recent moves to preserve Nauvoo's history is a extensive walking tour put together by the <a href="http://www.nauvoohistoricalsociety.org/nhs/">Nauvoo Historical Society</a>, called "The Way We Were."<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259789754/" title="downtown nauvoo by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="downtown nauvoo" height="375" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5290/5259789754_9f54417964.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>The tour covers almost all of the buildings in the downtown (the only ones that were left out were ones no information could be found on). <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259815966/" title="Motel Nauvoo by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="Motel Nauvoo" height="375" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5130/5259815966_70a16d26e6.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>Different sheets on each group of buildings are found in their respective modern buildings and there's also a master pamphlet that tells where all the sheets can be found that all of the buildings, like The Hotel Nauvoo, have. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5259776112/" title="The Hotel Nauvoo by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="The Hotel Nauvoo" height="375" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5245/5259776112_2d0f13c31d.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>The walking tour covers architecture, <br />

"J.F. REYNOLDS <br />
HOUSE FURNISHER <br />
FURNITURE, STOVES<br />
CARPETS, RUGS and DISHES<br />
CASH OR EASY ____"<br />
The last word is hard to read; I want to fill in "credit" because they used it back then too (not exactly like today of course) however, it still seems too modern. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5221960535/" title="J.F. Reynolds, but I have seen an old postcard in which the Lamoine Hotel hasn't been built yet in front of this building, and the ghost sign is still there. So since the Lamoine Hotel was built between 1926-27 <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=zh8GIReMX00C&pg=PA19&lpg=PA19&dq=lamoine+hotel,+macomb+built+in&source=bl&ots=h0Vx-jdnVQ&sig=jEdiVH3JvfRNTsbvlQbBaB47Zhk&hl=en&ei=0qv1TNGTJIep8AbJgu2RBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=lamoine%20hotel%2C%20macomb%20built%20in&f=false">(ref)</a>, the sign has to be older than that. (I don't actually have the postcard otherwise I would have posted it- at the time I decided it wasn't worth what the seller wanted for it. sigh.)baby cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14075423441247165807noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829227601778618805.post-51282576018392823832010-11-29T22:03:00.000-06:002010-11-29T22:03:08.818-06:00Ghost Signs: Dry Goods and Dave's Day 19These two ghost signs are on the side of another building in Nauvoo, IL. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5216473079/" title="nauvoo ghost signs by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="nauvoo ghost signs" height="375" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5165/5216473079_41be281433.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>It's a pretty long building. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5217067710/" title="nauvoo ghost signs by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="nauvoo ghost signs" height="375" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5203/5217067710_26bc28658e.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>The faint ghost sign in the back reads "Dry Goods" and according to the Nauvoo Historical Society walking tour the building was a dry goods store from 1891 until the 1920s.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The most obvious part of the ghost sign is the recently painted Budweiser sign, that also advertises for the Red Front, which is technically still in business as Dottie's Red Front, although most locals call it just "Dottie's."<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5216466395/" title="nauvoo ghost signs by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="nauvoo ghost signs" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4090/5216466395_891c692171.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>Looking closer we can see that it used to be "Dave's Red Front" and then it was also a bar- hence the Budweiser ad.<br />

This restored ghost sign can be found in Nauvoo, IL, on the side of the Hotel Nauvoo. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5216066061/" title="restored "bull" durham ghost sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4126/5216066061_f363e10ea7.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="restored "bull" durham ghost sign" /></a></div>According to the Nauvoo Historical Society's walking tour, the sign was originally painted during the late 1800s to early 1900s when the building was the Hudson Brothers' Meat Market. The sign has since been restored- most recently in the 1990s. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5216058559/" title="restored "bull" durham ghost sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5249/5216058559_3d3e30a21e.jpg" width="376" height="500" alt="restored "bull" durham ghost sign" /></a></div>As far as "Bull" Durham goes, these particular ghost signs are pretty common. Bull Durham Tobacco originates from Durham, North Carolina. It was named Bull Durham tobacco in 1868. <a href="http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/eaa/tobacco.html">(ref) </a>baby cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14075423441247165807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829227601778618805.post-6161770268007292252010-11-28T00:13:00.000-06:002010-11-28T00:13:31.643-06:00Ghost Signs: Gold Medal and Bull Durham Day 17For Day 17, we have a three in one special. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5213686224/" title="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5010/5213686224_71777aaed2.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign" /></a></div><a name='more'></a><br />
First up we have the <i>Times-Citizen</i> Printing ghost sign which we covered on <a href="http://abandonedhomesandgardens.blogspot.com/2010/11/ghost-signs-times-citizen-day-16.html">Day 16</a>. (This is the other side of that same building.) Except we also learn that the paper was printed "Twice Weekly" and the "Printing" part of the ghost sign is beside the "Times-Citizen" instead of underneath it.<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5213699770/" title="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5288/5213699770_73463f228d.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign" /></a></div>Next there are two more ghost signs one right on top of the other.* I can't really tell which sign came first- they're both so transparent and I haven't been able to find any historical pictures to help out. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5213681054/" title="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4126/5213681054_5199bd627f.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign" /></a></div>We'll just start with the Gold Medal Flour one that appears to have a bull as a new variation on the standard ghost sign. But wait, that bull is actually part of the rather large Bull Durham Tobacco sign! <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5213098349/" title="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5250/5213098349_860888134f.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Gold Medal and Bull Durham Ghost Sign" /></a></div>The Bull Durham ad includes the bull, their slogan "The Old Reliable" and "Bull Durham." More about Bull Durham tomorrow.<br />
<br />
*If you look really close, there also appears to be really faint outlines of letters in the middle of the bull (an o and an e towards the end) as well as in the rest of the Gold Medal crest. So there might be four ghost signs instead of just three.baby cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14075423441247165807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829227601778618805.post-8850932638679673502010-11-27T22:34:00.000-06:002010-11-27T22:34:42.410-06:00Ghost Signs: Times-Citizen Day 16Hmmm. Okay let's just pretend like there wasn't a long hiatus between Day 15 and Day 16 shall we? Moving on. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5212938269/" title="Times-Citizen Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="Times-Citizen Ghost Sign" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4091/5212938269_74c342469d.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><br />
This ghost sign is on the side of a small brick building in Roseville, IL. At the top the sign says "Times-Citizen" and at the bottom "Printing." The middle part is a bit more illegible. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The <i>Roseville Times-Citizen</i> was one of the major papers in this small town. According to the <i>1903 Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois</i> the <i>Times-Citizen</i> was formed by the merger of two papers (<i>The Times</i> and <i>The Roseville Citizen</i>) on June 30, 1900. The paper was apparently "a seven-column quarto, Republican in politics. The paper is owned by the Roseville Printing and Publishing Co., with Mr. Taylor as publisher. The company owns the building in which the paper has its home, and it is styled the Temple of Truth." <a href="http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/county/warren/1903_his_7_war.htm">(ref)</a> I am assuming that this building is the building which the 1903 Encyclopedia references. <br />
<br />
The last year of publication that I have verified so far is 1954. The paper is no longer publishing and hasn't for quite some time. But if you'd like to buy the obits from that 1954 issue just follow this like for the Warren Co. Historical Society. <a href="http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:pSypAW9kpB0J:www.wcplibrary.org/Geneology/PriceListMay2009.doc+last+issue+of+%22Roseville+Times-Citizen%22&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a">(ref)</a>baby cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14075423441247165807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829227601778618805.post-49964471237609151162010-10-26T21:14:00.000-06:002010-10-26T21:14:12.153-06:00Ghost Signs: Ghost Sign with an Old Picture painted on top- Day 15<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5119141043/" title="h by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1212/5119141043_1b52469c37.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="h" /></a></div>This ghost sign has an old picture painted on top of it. I can't read at all what the ghost sign says underneath, but what's interesting is that there appears to be a signature in the bottom of the ghost sign. This building used to house the <i>Macomb Journal.</i> A paper that had served Macomb since 1855. The paper is now the <i>McDonough Co. Smith & Son...- Day 13Well, well, well, I have to say my ghost busting skills are getting better everyday, despite this post being a day late. But we're going to have two Ghost Signs posts today to make up for it. Our first ghost sign is on the side of a building in Colchester, Illinois. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5115616869/" title="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign" height="375" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1421/5115616869_3b4ef0caa5.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The sign is in great condition, even though I don't think it's been painted since the business was there. At first I thought the sigh read, "A.W. Smith and Son Clothing, but when I started doing research on the sign, I couldn't find anything. I even looked in the 1885 edition of <i>History of McDonough County, Illinois</i>. I found an A.J. Smith and Son in the book but no A.W. Smith and Son, and then I finally realized that I was misreading the sign. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5115622915/" title="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign" height="375" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1257/5115622915_0f1596db0a.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>You see, there are two signs- one right on top of the other, and I was reading them together instead of separately. The later sign on top reads- "A.W. Smith Clothing" with "Hats" and "Shoes" written in smaller print in the middle. (It's hard to tell from these pictures, I'll try to get better ones next time I'm in town and update this). Then underneath the sign originally said "A.J. Smith and Son Clothing." The son part in the middle is easy to see and that's why I was inadvertently misreading the sign. The J is underneath the W and you can just barely make out the top of the J and the bottom curve of the J. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5115603743/" title="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign" height="164" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1372/5115603743_8739555723.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>According to the <i>History of McDonough County, Illinois</i> Albert J. Smith, Sr. was from Canada originally; he moved to Colchester in 1863 and in 1881 he established his clothing store which over time became quite a large firm. The book doesn't mention an A.W. Smith so he could have been born after the publication of the book or he is a later descendant of A.J. Smith.<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5115610243/" title="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="AW Smith Clothing Ghost Sign" height="375" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1329/5115610243_ea7aa5dfbd.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>baby cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14075423441247165807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829227601778618805.post-15425588933956855502010-10-23T22:41:00.000-06:002010-10-23T22:41:09.182-06:00Ghost Signs: W.B. Martin -Day 12This ghost sign is on an old building in Good Hope, IL. The business used to be W.B. Martin's and it sold notions, shoes, and furnishings. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5109652720/" title="W.B. <div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5109657936/" title="W.B. When I first saw the sign all I read was "Horse Grocery" which I thought was hilarious, imagining a whole bunch of horses going shopping for food. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5105544396/" title="One Horse Grocery Ghostsign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1235/5105544396_c8f2bd0c06.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="One Horse Grocery Ghostsign" /></a></div>After doing some searching I finally figured out that the word in front of horse is "one." So the sign actually reads ".....'s One Horse Grocery." So far the only one horse grocery I've been able to turn up and records on is in Iowa, but in Council Bluffs- all the way across the state. That One Horse Grocery was started by "Honest John" Clausen in 1866. For more information on that check out The Historical Society of Pottawattamie County's website <a href="http://www.thehistoricalsociety.org/implement_district.htm">here</a>. I don't think this sign says "Clausen's" even though the front of the first word looks like it could be Clausen's I think the word ends with a "t." It's possible the sign could have been repainted or altered since it was first painted so maybe it is an advertisement for Clausen's One Horse Grocery after all. <br />

I think the last three letters are SON. <br />

It doesn't matter if it's still a jewelry store or not you can always tell that's what it was supposed to be. Such is the case with the Paule Jewelry Co. store in Burlington, IA. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5100313087/" title="Paule Jewelry Co Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="Paule Jewelry Co Ghost Sign" height="375" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1218/5100313087_00220da515.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>This used-to-be jewelry store is now the Stylique Salon and Day Spa. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5100306131/" title="Paule Jewelry Co Ghost Sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="Paule Jewelry Co Ghost Sign" height="349" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1371/5100306131_94cb008620.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
The sign is literally carved into the black facade of the jewelry store. <br />

I couldn't find hardly any background information on the Paule Jewelry Store, except for this <a href="http://www3.familyoldphotos.com/photo/iowa/18668/paule-jewelry-co-burlington-iowa">old post card picture showing what the inside of the building looked like.</a><br />

In downtown Colchester, Illinois there is a small, putrid pink building called... "The Worm Hole." <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5095061035/" title="the worm hole by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="the worm hole" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4110/5095061035_750ed0d1f8.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a>The Worm Hole used to be a sort of bait and tackle/ hunting supplies store, but now it just sits. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5095047407/" title="The Worm Hole by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="The Worm Hole" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4087/5095047407_d788d939f1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>And the worm on the side of the building waits... eternally eager to jump onto the hook. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5095031911/" title="The worm at The Worm Hole. by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="The worm at The Worm Hole." height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4106/5095031911_595c14f4ce.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>And this grey kitty sits and won't let anybody pet him. <br />

Flour- Day 6This ghost sign is pretty much unreadable except the word flour at the very bottom. I would assume it's for Gold Medal Flour but since I can't pick out "Gold Medal" or the logo, I'm not going to commit to that. <br />

The consignment shop was long gone the first time D and I visited Abingdon last winter, but now even the sign itself is gone. It's almost like a ghost sign exorcism. <br />

Day 4This is a sign on a building off the square in Macomb, IL that advertises a Sears, Roebuck and Co. Service Center that is long gone. <br />

Because right next to that ghost sign is another one. <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5081943153/" title="firestone tires ghost sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="firestone tires ghost sign" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4153/5081943153_b302dab366.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a>This is a sign for Firestone Tires. It's somewhat difficult to see the tire part on this sign, but luckily...<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5081938439/" title="firestone tires ghost sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="firestone tires ghost sign" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4131/5081938439_0ea67916ea.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>on the other side of the building is an identical sign and it's easier to read! <br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5082542882/" title="firestone tires ghost sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="firestone tires ghost sign" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4126/5082542882_b8aa0ab033.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>(I have adjusted the color a bit...)baby cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14075423441247165807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829227601778618805.post-2304125045164729882010-10-13T17:27:00.000-06:002010-10-13T17:27:23.986-06:00Ghost Signs: Columbia Batteries- Day 2For the second day of ghost signs, we're going to be visiting Good Hope, Illinois, population 415.<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5079117801/" title="A Ghost sign in Good Hope by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="A Ghost sign in Good Hope" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4003/5079117801_d12aabd2ec.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a> This ghost sign is on the side of an agricultural building (one that has fertilizer and such, I think). It advertises Columbia Dry Batteries which "cost no more, last longer."<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theunfinishedhouse/5079720406/" title="the faded good hope ghost sign by baby cat and the unfinished house, on Flickr"><img alt="the faded good hope ghost sign" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/5079720406_bd7f9dfd67.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>In the last picture (in which I've altered the colors) you can see the slogan very well.
